UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies during COVID-19: UN should support online reviews in 2021 | Joint Letter

Full PDF (ENG)

The work of the UN Treaty Bodies is severely impacted by the COVID-19 effects that prevent members of the United Nations Treaty Bodies (UNTBs) to meet physically in Geneva. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recommended that all sessions until the end of this year will take place online, while some will be cancelled. The country reviews for 2020 are postponed or under consideration for cancellation.

Given the negative impact for all the countries due to be reviewed by the Treaty Bodies in 2020, the TB-net coalition jointly with ISHR and Amnesty prepared a joint open NGO letter to call on the Committees and their UN Secretariat to remedy the situation and make sure that periodic reviews can resume in 2021 to avoid the continuation of a glaring protection gap. LRWC was among 523 civil society organizations signing the letter.
