Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada has joined 34 lawyers’ organizations and human rights groups, led by the Netherlands-based Lawyers for Lawyers, to advocate for the release of two Turkish lawyers, Ebru Timtik and Aytaç Ünsal, and to create awareness for the the quickly deteriorating situation of lawyers in Turkey.

Ebru Timtik and Aytaç Ünsal, from the Progressive Lawyers’ Association (Çağdaş Hukukçular Derneği, ÇHD) have been on a hunger strike for over 100 days to demand fair trial rights. The undersigned are gravely concerned with the diminishment of lawyers’ human rights in Turkey, including the proposed reform of the bar associations and the threats to their independence, the ex-officio investigations that have been started against the bar associations of Diyarbakir and Ankara, and about the Parole Act exceptions in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After consulting lawyers from Turkey, the organizations, led by Lawyers for Lawyers, have published an advertisement in two newspapers, BirGün and Yeni Yaşam, to draw attention to – and create awareness for – lawyers in Turkey, and to call on the Turkish authorities to publicly support lawyers as essential agents in the administration of justice, to stop harassing and prosecuting them, to reverse unlawful convictions and to release the unjustly detained from prison.
