On 10 April 2026, Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada joined a group of 30 international legal organizations in a letter to several UN Special Procedures mandate holders calling for their intervention to seek  the immediate and unconditional release of Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh and her husband, human rights defender Reza Khandan.

Ms Sotoudeh was arrested at her home in Tehran by agents reportedly affiliated with the Ministry of Intelligence of the Islamic Republic of Iran. She was taken to an undisclosed location. Ms. Sotoudeh’s husband, Reza Khandan, who is also a human rights defender has been detained in Evin Prison since 13 December 2024 in connection with his peaceful advocacy, including opposition to compulsory veiling rules.
