On 2 May 2022, Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada (LRWC) joined Lawyers for Lawyers (L4L) in a submission to the UN Human Rights Committee (HRCttee) in preparation for the next review of Colombia’s implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). At its upcoming session from 27 June to 29 July 2022., the HRCttee is scheduled to adopt a List of Issues for its eighth periodic review of Colombia.

The joint submission by L4L and LRWC focuses on the situation of human rights lawyers in Colombia, including obstacles to their professional independence and  rights violations committed against them. The submission sets out concerns about Colombia’s failure to ensure the right of all persons to equality before the courts and tribunals, as well as the right to a fair trial, including the obligation to guarantee effective access to legal services provided by an independent legal profession in accordance with the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
