The Law Society of Upper Canada awarded the 2016 Human Rights Award at a 22 February Event, honouring Human rights defenders Waleed Abu al-Khair and LRWC Member Cindy Blackstock, PhD for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of human rights and the promotion of the rule of law provincially, nationally and internationally.

LRWC Executive Director Gail Davidson accepted the award on behalf of Waleed Abu al-Khair, who remains in prison in Saudi Arabia as a result of his human rights advocacy. LRWC has advocated for his release on numerous occasions.
